Five years of women energizing territories in Central America

The program Energizing Women’s Power and Equality in Central America project is coming to an end. Together with women in rural communities, it has realized capacity-building and community leadership, shaping life-changing business ideas. The program shows that when women gain access to opportunities, knowledge, and resources, the impact extends far beyond themselves and their families, reaching entire communities.

After nearly five years, we can share the successes of working alongside and supporting women in rural communities across Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala.

A journey built through learning

Through training and capacity-strengthening processes, women enhanced their knowledge and skills to develop their own business ideas, identify opportunities within their territories, and access tools that would help them navigate challenges.

For many women, this process also meant recognizing their own capabilities and exchanging experiences with peers. But is also meant building the confidence to envision new ways of income generation and making decisions about the futures of their families. In Honduras, the experiences of women entrepreneurs demonstrate the importance of ongoing support and practical tools that enable them to develop and strengthen their businesses.

In El Salvador, rural women created new opportunities for their families, through knowledge and the transformation from nature’s richness into value-added products. Their experiences show us that economic autonomy is not built in isolation; it also depends on support networks and collective action. Entrepreneurship lies not only in the businesses themselves, but also in what they generate around them: collaboration networks, local exchanges, and new forms of economic participation.

Preserving cultural identity

Entrepreneurship is also used to keep the cultural identity of the territories alive. In Guatemala, the experiences of women weavers show how traditional textiles not only preserve ancestral knowledge but also provide a source of income. In El Salvador, initiatives centered around ancestral flavors highlight the richness of local ingredients, generate income for families, and stimulate local economies and communities.

The legacy of women in their communities

The experiences of the women show that entrepreneurship can become a platform for promoting more sustainable practices while strengthening local economies.

The stories of those cultivating new possibilities, and of women who have found in weaving a path toward new opportunities, remind us that every enterprise is also an opportunity to imagine different ways of producing, collaborating, and building community.

Voices Energizing the Future

The businesses that have been launched and the networks that have been built will continue to grow across these territories, creating new opportunities for women, their families, and their communities. Over the past five years, these women have shown us that it is possible to weave together tradition and innovation, connect economic autonomy with sustainability, and transform knowledge, creativity, and leadership into forces that drive meaningful change.

This journey would not have been possible without the commitment, close collaboration, and dedicated work of our partner organizations: Centro de Derechos de las Mujeres in Honduras; Unidad Ecológica Salvadoreña and Fundación CORDES in El Salvador; and Red de Mujeres Ixiles-ASOREMI, Consejo de Mujeres Indígenas y Biodiversidad, Asociación Semilla de Sol, and Alterna in Guatemala. These organizations supported women within their communities, strengthened their capacities, and contributed to advancing equality.

To all of them, and to every woman who shared her knowledge, experiences, and aspirations, we extend our sincere gratitude for reminding us that the most meaningful transformations are built collectively.

The Energizing Project is coming to a close, but the energy and voices of the women who made it possible will continue to illuminate and inspire new futures across Central America.
