Youth groups using Indigenous knowledge to restore their environment

Restoring the Local Environment in Homa Bay is one of the documentaries Hivos produced for Africa Climate Week, held from 4 to 8 September in Nairobi. The film was shown to the media to illustrate how local communities can effectively create and implement climate solutions.

In the film, we meet the young people of Homa Bay on the shores of Lake Victoria in Kenya. They have formed youth groups to protect Indigenous lands and restore the environment. To learn how, they sought out the expertise of their elders. Some of their projects are an Indigenous tree nursey to help with reforestation, sustainable fishing ponds, and introducing ecologically-friendly farming techniques to their community.

And they do all this with minimal resources and funds. Directing a larger share of international climate finance to local solutions like theirs would tap an enormous reserve of untouched potential.
