Call for Photographs of Kenyan Women Dressed In the Fashion of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s

Is your mother or grandmother one of those stylish women who wore miniskirts, hot-pants, bellbottoms, platform shoes, afro-hair styles in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s?

Well, we want to hear from you!

What are we looking for?

We want photographs of your mothers, grandmothers and aunties wearing miniskirts, short dresses hot-pants, halter-tops, tank-tops, drain pipes, peddle-pushers, bell-bottoms, platform shoes and in afro-hair styles taken in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.

The photos do not have to be in perfect quality. They can be torn, crumpled, in grayscale, colour, black and white, in whichever size, all are welcome. They should be accompanied with information about the people in the photographs; their names, how they are related to you, where the photo was taken, when and why.

Let us celebrate these pioneering Kenyan women by holding an exhibition of their photographs.

What do you get out of this?  You get your relatives, friends or yourself recognized as part of history.  You get to tell a story that shows the world another side of Kenya. And really you get to pass on memories and histories to future generations.

Who knew Cucu (meaning grandmother in Kikuyu) wore a miniskirt?

Hivos East Africa through the Women@Work and Voice programs will use the photographs to hold an exhibition series entitled; “OUR GRANDMOTHERS MINISKIRTS” in 6 counties, Mombasa, Kisumu, Naivasha, Nanyuki, Bungoma and Nairobi.

How do you submit your photograph?
