Malawi took to the polls in Tripartite Elections  on the 21st of May 2019 after a strong campaign by WE4L through it’s partners, to increase the number of women in elected political positions. This campaign produced a strong Women’s Manifesto driven by women from all corners of Malawi. So far we have seen very positive results 45 women elected as compared to 32 in 2014, a 31% increase in female MPs who now make up 22% of Parliament. The local government numbers have also gone up from 11% to 12.6%.

  • 6.9 million registered voters
  • 54% of them are between the ages of 18 and 34
  • 56% of registered voters are female
  • All 7 presidential candidates are male
  • More than 5,000 polling stations across the country
  • Polls opened for 12 hours from 06:00 local time (04:00 GMT)
