The Bolivian Amazon provided  the stage for the third international meeting of “Sharing Socio-environmental Monitoring Systems”, attended by indigenous representatives from Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador.

 

The event, supported by Hivos, was held from October 25-29 in Rurrenabaque (Beni) with the aim of intensifying exchanges amongst the monitors, technicians and civic organizations working on environmental issues and the rights of indigenous peoples.

 

During the five-day meeting, socio-environmental leaders and monitors from Quechua, Guarani, Amarakaeri and Mosetén towns, among others, shared the systems they use to monitor their territories in the advance of vast extractive industries.

 

For example, participants shared their experiences with the use of drones and successful methods to start negotiations with oil companies and the State.

 

Giovanny Vera, part of the InfoAmazonia digital platform team, gave workshops to familiarize participants with tools used for citizen journalism.

 

Hivos supports initiatives that build respect for the self-determination of indigenous peoples in the comprehensive management of natural resources and ecosystems.
