Hivos at SEforALL Forum in Lisbon

April 26, 2018

With the theme, “Leaving No One Behind”, this year’s SEforALL Forum will take place at a critical moment for accelerating progress on universal energy access under SDG7.

During the Forum, Hivos will organise and take part in inspiring sessions alongside policy makers and practitioners to harness the potential of decentralised renewable energy solutions, which are key to universal energy access and empowerment of people, companies and communities.

Access to clean, affordable and reliable energy has the potential to transform lives, bringing health, education and new economic opportunities, including jobs. Yet the delivery of energy access is slow, particularly in poor and remote areas. Still one in five people lacks access to modern electricity and 3 billion people rely on wood, coal, charcoal or animal waste for cooking and heating.

Closing the energy gaps will be the focus in this SEforALL Forum, taking place in Lisbon from 2 to 3 May. The Forum will provide a platform for leaders from governments, UN systems, private sector, civil society and international organisations to share the latest evidence of innovations in providing electricity access, accelerating renewable energy and improving energy efficiency.

At the centre will be the urgency for bringing affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy to under-served populations, communities and regions and share the latest data on progress – or lack of – in achieving SDG7.

Strategic meetings
Next to our engagement in the official SEforALL Forum programme, we will meet with our partners Power for All and representatives from the ACCESS network to build on our work on energy access. These strategy meetings are part of a larger process of engaging CSOs and forming multi-stakeholder partnership, just as we work together in the lead up to the High-level Political Forum in New York in July, where the first review of SDG7 will take place. Hivos is strongly involved in this process and has supported the development of 27 Policy Briefs as well as a Summary for Policy Makers capturing the SDG7 progress while stressing decentralised renewable energy as crucial for advancing SDG7 implementation.
