And fire wood is a mayor problem in these areas. The digester saves time, no more smoky kitchens. And the by-product (slurry) is the most importent benefit. (James is not interested in the gas lamp, since he is using solar power). The compost pits are keeping the garden clean.
His daughter cooking in the kitchen on biogas.
A Biogas digester is installed closely to the barn which houses cows. In the mornings, one should throw 2 to 3 buckets of cow dung into digester, mix it with water and then let this mixture run into the digester. The mixture then provides enough biogas to cook on for the whole day and even light the biogas lamp in the evening.
The bio slurry, the remains after the biogas is extracted, has proven to be a very fertile manure. It runs into a basin from where it can be applied onto the vegetable garden or mixed with other bio degradable waste and turned to compost.

Hivos partners in first global cooking campaign: Clean Cooking Is..

November 5, 2019, Hivos is partnering in the first global cooking campaign; ‘Clean Cooking Is..’ The Campaign is launched by the Clean Cooking Alliance during the opening session of the Clean Cooking Forum 2019 in Nairobi. The campaign is created exclusively to drive greater awareness, engagement and support for clean cooking.

The issue

Still three billion people depend on polluting, open fires or inefficient stoves to cook their food. This is harming their health, the climate, and the environment. Women and girls, who often spend hours cooking and collecting fuel, are disproportionally affected.

Clean and modern cooking solutions have the potential to reduce deaths and lower air pollution, but scaling up technologies and business models have been slow due to a lack of investments in the sector.

How to get involved?

With a simple question – what is clean cooking to you? – the Clean Cooking Is campaign gathers voices from all over the world to spread the word about this important issue. To join the movement, record yourself completing the sentence, “Clean cooking is…” and post it on twitter, instagram or facebook with the hashtag #CleanCookingIs. Your story will be added to the #CleanCookingIs content hub.
