Hivos at the High-Level Political Forum 2018, New York

July 6, 2018

The UN High-Level Political Forum 2018 will set the stage for the first official review of SDG7 on access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.

Next to the official review process and a high-level segment including Voluntary National Reviews and the signing of the Ministerial Declaration, Hivos will organise and take part in a number of side-event and dialogues. Alongside high-level policy makers and practitioners we will press for progress on decentralised renewable energy solutions.

To speed up the delivery of energy across the world, decentralised renewable energy (DRE) is the most flexible and cost-effective solution. With locally generated energy through off-grid and mini-grids, DRE is a ‘leapfrog’ technology which is already transforming the energy sector in an environmentally and financially sustainable way. DRE is democratising markets, opening them to wider participation and competition, while reaching a much wider scope of delivery, providing access to those people living in poor and remote areas.

Progress and further action on SDG7 will be the at the front in this High-Level Political Forum 2018, taking place in New York from 9 to 18 July. The landmark event gathers leaders and energy frontrunners from governments, UN systems, private sector and civil society who will urge decision-makers to prioritise and speed up the delivery of sustainable energy access.

Hivos will participate and contribute to the HLPF together with ENERGIA, the government of Germany and our partners in the Brooklyn Coalition. These partners count the governments of the Netherlands, Kenya and Nepal; private sector companies SELCO and Schneider Electric; and civil society organisations Hivos, ENERGIA and SNV.
