Introduction
Hivos is implementing the Healthy Food Africa (HFA) project which aims to increase the resilience of food systems, and to link food production to nutrition performance, thereby increasing the range and quality of food products for a healthy diet. To achieve this, it engages with farmers, food processors, retailers, civil society organizations (CSOs), policymakers and local experts, and helps them create, and test, innovative technologies, practices and governance arrangements that contribute to a more sustainable, resilient and healthy food system for all.
The HFA project is running 3 Food System Labs (FSL) in Lusaka, Chongwe and Fort Portal. In Lusaka and Chongwe, we are working with 50 traders and 50 farmers respectively to address identified food system challenges. We further use a multi-stakeholder approach to transformations in local food systems, through a structured participatory, transdisciplinary, co-creating and co-learning process.
Background to Activity
Healthy Food Africa is a research & innovation project aiming at more sustainable, equitable and resilient food systems in 10 African cities. The project is a collaborative effort by 17 partners in Europe and Africa, funded by the European Union Horizon2020 programme. It is organized in thematic Work Packages that have a focus on five thematic aspects of food systems i.e. Healthy Nutrition (WP2), Sustainable Production (WP3), food packaging and safety (WP4) and Food chain governance (WP5). WP2 on healthy nutrition requires specific detailed information for analysis on nutrition in both Lusaka and Chongwe FSLs. Though some information was collection during the baseline survey, it was not detailed enough for scientific analysis as the baseline covered other work packages as well. WP2 has therefore designed a tool to get the information they require and would like the FSLs to collect the information on their behalf.
Overall objective
To improve nutrition and mainstream healthy dietary patterns through increased awareness and rapid but sustainable transformation of consumption habits.
