Call for Expression of Interest: VCA annual planning and reflection meeting facilitator

August 31, 2022

Hivos, alongside Akina Mama wa Afrika, Slumdwellers International, South South North, Fundación Avina and WWF is currently implementing the Voices for Just Climate Action program. The program aims to ensure that by 2025, local civil society and underrepresented groups will have taken on a central role as creators, facilitators and advocates of innovative climate solutions. Their inclusion is crucial for effective and lasting climate responses, and because the climate crisis is also a societal challenge with ethical and human rights aspects.

Region: Kenya
Office: Hivos East Africa
Task: Facilitator annual planning & reflection meeting
Application deadline: September 12th 2022

The overall approach of the program is to work with civil society to build wide societal support for locally shaped climate solutions through an inclusive and rights-based approach. This includes building a broad-based climate alliance at country level, bridging divides (urban-rural, gender, youth) that amplifies voices in new unusual ways. In addition, it will influence national and global policies and financial flows (e.g. climate finance, private sector investments) in support of these locally shaped solutions.

Background of task

The VCA consortium (AMwA, Hivos, SDI, SSN, Avina and WWF) will hold an annual planning and reflection meeting in Kenya from Sept 26th to Sept 30th (exclusive of travel). The facilitator will be expected to support the planning (with reference documents and guidance from VCA consortium partners), and then support the facilitation of the meeting which will involve the consortium members and civil society partners (at least 34 organizations).

Assignment

The workshop requires a facilitation team knowledgeable in process facilitation. The intention of the meeting is to provide a space for planning for 2022, and reflection on the program, including capacity assessments, Theory of Change reviews and other exercises. You will work with the VCA consortium organizations to conceptualize a program that accommodates the multiple needs that should be covered by this session, including learning, sharing and adjusting theories of change as well as planning processes. The program should engage the participants creatively and should be developed in a highly interactive manner. The facilitator will not be required to have in-depth knowledge on climate action and climate justice matters (although it is a plus) but is asked to develop a program that takes advantage of the multiple capacities offered by program participants to build an engaging program that delivers high-impact outputs from the session that will be used to enhance programmatic outputs and reorient direction from learnings noted during this workshop.

The facilitating team is expected to carry out the following:

  • Co-creation and delivery design of the program together with the VCA consortium members
  • Attend and facilitate all sessions of the workshop. Where external actors may be engaged, facilitator will assist in the smooth running of the session
  • Rapporteuring and photography
  • Must be available to travel on Sunday 25th September until Saturday 1st October

Outputs

Report of the meeting, adequately documenting outputs and learnings from sessions

Timeframe

This assignment is expected to take a maximum of ten (10) days including planning, facilitation and rapporteuring and report writing

Who can apply?

The facilitator should meet the following requirements:

  • A good understanding of the climate justice debate in Kenya is a plus
  • Proven knowledge and experience of using participatory approaches and innovative facilitation techniques
  • Demonstrated experience in process facilitation – knowledge and implementation of Theory of Change will be an advantage
  • Confident, persuasive, and able to communicate very well in English and Kiswahili
  • Ability to manage various dynamics of diverse groups
