The Green Transition project focuses on climate-smart agriculture, value addition, and entrepreneurship, targeting urban youth in Bulawayo and Mutare, Zimbabwe. It empowers them to influence local climate and food systems policies and actively promote urban resilience using knowledge of relevant policies, strong advocacy skills, and practical green and business skills.

How the project works

Through this initiative, youth will learn practical skills in hydroponics, aquaponics, organic farming, indigenous food production, food processing, business management, and marketing. Policy training workshops and engagement with key stakeholders will also be part of their training.

The project additionally strengthens climate resilience by promoting sustainable agricultural practices and developing entrepreneurship in urban settings. This complements the ongoing Urban Futures program, which focuses on enhancing urban food systems through sustainable production, value addition, and market linkages. By aligning with Urban Futures, the Youth Green Transition project builds on existing efforts to introduce innovative, climate-resilient agricultural solutions while expanding opportunities for youth in agribusiness.

What we hope to achieve in the longer term

Another important aim is to develop a training manual for the next cohort of youth in the Urban Futures program that will guide them through developing attractive business proposals to entice investment and partners. We want to see young green entrepreneurs run legally registered businesses, increase their profits, clients, and partners, and most importantly, improve their quality of life and businesses. We also hope to boost their leadership skills so they can become efficient managers and ultimately help strengthen the food system and mitigate climate change. We believe this type of training will get more young people interested in policy decision-making processes and developing policy briefs and stronger partnerships with key stakeholders.
