Adolescent pregnancy has been a public health challenge in Uganda. Adolescent girls and young women do not have adequate access to SRHR information and services. Those who want to prevent unintended pregnancy do not have adequate access to modern contraception as a result some resort to unsafe abortions which contribute to maternal deaths and injuries.
To address this, Uganda Youth and Adolescents Health Forum (UYAHF) as part of the SHE Decides Alliance, embarked on a ‘Youths Engage and Take Action for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights’ Project, with support from the Regional SRHR Fund. To promote cross-learning, the project was implemented alongside youth-led and youth-serving organizations which included My Age Trust in Zimbabwe, HeR Liberty in Malawi and Organization of African Youth in Kenya.
The project utilized integrated approaches to ensure adolescent access to SRHR services which included evidence generation for advocacy, capacity building, partnerships and movement building, policy engagement and meaningful youth participation. These approaches enabled young people to demand for improved access to high quality, youth-friendly SRHR services including contraceptive information and services.
The case study is part of the Regional SRHR Fund’s documentation of case studies aimed at supporting cross learning and knowledge sharing to enable organizations conceptualize, design and coordinate adolescent SRHR advocacy.
