Hivos: 50 years for a freer, fairer and more harmonious world

August 21, 2018

  • As part of the celebration of its 50th anniversary, Hivos will sign several conventions and begin its work with its first major donor.
  • The activities will focus on traveling to the past, visiting the present and projecting the future. The organization will begin the trend analysis to project future scenarios.

The humanistic social innovation organization Hivos celebrates 50 years of working for a freer, fairer and more sustainable world. The organization is carrying out this year a series of virtual and face-to-face activities around the world that will end in December.

The celebration begins at the Latin American headquarters in San Jose, Costa Rica, with a cocktail with focal points of cooperation in which two memorandums of understanding will be signed with the government of this country: Centro para la Sostenibilidad Urbana (Center for Urban Sustainability) and Laboratorio de Innovación Pública (Public Innovation Laboratory). Both intend to continue the work of Gobierno Abierto (Open Government) initiated in the previous administration.

On Wednesday 22, Thursday 23 and Friday 24 of August, the organization will carry out activities to explore the past, visit the present and project the future. On Thursday, another collaboration agreement will be signed with the CRUSA Foundation with the aim of promoting projects focused on social entrepreneurship, innovation and the development of new forms of collaboration.

That same day, a workshop will be held to identify future scenarios with partners from the Freedom and Accountability area of Hivos. On Friday 24, a workshop on good practices in human rights and business will be held with AED. It is possible to attend this event with prior registration, which can be done here.

On Friday morning, we will celebrate with our first major donor, Óscar Hernández, from Toribio. Besides being a fashion designer, Hernández has focused on promoting inclusive work spaces and working with artisan women from throughout the region.

The celebration will continue in the country offices of Latin America (Guatemala, Ecuador and Bolivia) and in other regions of the world where Hivos has a strong presence: East Africa, South Africa, North Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. The last celebration of the year will be held in the global office, located in The Hague, Netherlands.

Hivos is an organization that works towards more open and green societies: spaces where power is challenged and redefined. In open societies, people look at each other in the eye knowing they are equal and sharing their different genders, beliefs and ways of loving. In a green society, people take advantage of and share natural resources in harmony; food and energy are produced with love towards the planet and towards people.
