Hivos Southern Africa Zambia Hub’s Sustainable Diets for All (SD4All) participated in the Agritech Expo Zambia held in Lusaka, Zambia on 27 – 29, 2017. Agritech Expo Zambia is a business-to-business platform for agricultural professionals and institutions, from small-scale farmers to commercial enterprises, to engage and conduct business with some of the world’s leading suppliers to the agricultural industry.
Agritech Expo Zambia offered Hivos a unique opportunity to meet some of the world’s leading agricultural companies, network with agricultural professionals as well as government, farmers from all walks and union officials.
“The Agritec Expo provided an opportunity for Hivos to demonstrate that we still have a lot of options to the maize crop. At our stand we had millet, sorghum, cassava mealie meal and seeds, this reminded many show goers and exhibitors of the available and nutritious crops that Zambia can grow,” said William Chilufya, Regional Advocacy Manager, SD4All.
Hivos prominently participated is various free-to-attend technical workshops at the exhibition. Of major interest was the fall army discussion where Hivos emphasized the message of crop diversification as a solution or an alternative to the fall army worms crisis.
The free to attend workshop was also an opportunity for Hivos to gather new knowledge about new development around the fight against army worms – we learnt that the army worms are here to stay.
Around 4500 people visited the Hivos stand and listened to talks on mono cropping and diet diversity.
“We had millet, sorghum, cow peas, and cassava to showcase and given to high level delegations. Our message was around diversified production for diverse plate. We could see it, our visitors were deeply inspired going by questions and follow up issues around crop diversity,” said Chilufya.
