Recognition for our fight for LGBTIQ+ rights in Bolivia

October 6, 2025

During this year’s Pride in La Paz, Bolivia, two Hivos colleagues received a special award in recognition of our long-standing commitment to LGBTIQ+ rights in the country.

“As Hivos, we actively contributed,” said Eliot, who accepted the award along with Lorena. “We set up a large stage and put Pride flags along the entire route. I was touched to see how visible this made the march.”

The March of Sexual and Gender Diversity took to the streets of La Paz on June 28 as part of a month of Pride activities focused on diversity.

All thanks to our donors

The city council of La Paz particularly praised our project “Adelante con la Diversidad ” (“Forward with Diversity”) that actively combats discriminatory legislation. This has paid off. In the last several years, more than nine laws have been passed that contribute to equal rights for LGBTIQ+ people. “It’s wonderful to be recognized for what we’ve achieved together. Without the support of our donors, this would never have been possible,” Eliot said.

Forward with Diversity also supports activists, journalists, and artists. For example, the project helped organize and fund queer film festivals that bring people closer together. And it offered training in investigative journalism to put the consequences of discrimination on the political agenda.
